Subsidy relieves pinch as global fuel prices surge

Africa-Press – Tanzania. DESPITE global fuel prices keep on skyrocketing, Tanza-nia consumers have continued to get relief as a result of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s led government subsiding the prices.

Of late her 100bn/- subsidy in petroleum products’ prices has forced diesel charges to drop to 3,143/- from 3,510/- and petrol from 3,497/- to 3,220/- a litre.

The subsidy has been prorated according to different ports of petroleum products entry into the country, for instance at Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Mtwara petrol prices were reduced by 277/- per litre and diesel by 367/- a litre.

According to the state- ment released on Tuesday by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA)’s Director General, Eng. Modestus Lumato, in Dar es Salaam, diesel passed through Tanga Port got a subsidy of 377/- a litre and petrol 272/- for the same quantity.

Eng Lumato said for the Mtwara Port, subsidy to diesel was 452/- a litre and petrol 299/- for the same quantity and in turn reduces prices to 3,172/- per litre (for diesel) and 3,205/- for the same quantity for petrol.

He noted that if there would be no subside, prices of diesel would go as higher as 3,626/- per litre and petro3,505/- same quantity in Mtwara.

Elaborating, he said in Dar es Salaam as from today petrol will be sold at 3,220/- per litre up from 3,498/- and diesel at 3,143/- a litre from 3,510/-.

However, EWURA has assured the public that it still continues to encourage competition in the sector, including making available petroleum products price information.

“This information on prices is intended to enable stakehold- ers to make informed decisions on petroleum prices at any particular time,” the statement said.

Oil marketing companies are free to sell their products at a price that gives them a competitive advantage provided that, such charges do not exceed the price cap and again not below the floor price for the relevant product.

“All petrol stations are re- quired to publish petroleum product prices on clearly visible boards.

The price boards should clearly show prices charged, discounts offered as well as any trade incentives or promotions on offer,” it ordered.

The statement added: “It is an offense not to have prices published on boards located in clearly visible places in front of petrol stations.

Failure to adhere to this directive will attract puni- tive measures from EWURA.”

However, consumers are encouraged to purchase from stations that sell products at the most competitive prices and of- fer better services.
