Africa-Press – Tanzania. MORE than10bn/- has been allocated for the construction and rehabilitation of local roads in Dodoma City in the 2026/27 financial year.
Deputy Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office–Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), Dr Festo Dugange, told the National Assembly in Dodoma yesterday that the government is committed to improving road infrastructure in the capital.
He said the allocation of 10.23bn/- follows an investment of 6.12bn/- in the current financial year, which has been used to construct and rehabilitate tarmac local roads in the city.
“Honourable Speaker, Dodoma City is the national capital and has been experiencing rapid population growth and urban expansion, which has increased the demand for local roads,” he said.
Dr Dugange was responding to a question by Special Seats MP Najma Giga, who sought to know the government’s plans to improve local roads in the fast-growing city.
He further explained that between the 2021/22 and 2024/25 financial years, a total of 59.6bn/- was spent on similar projects, reaffirming the government’s continued commitment to upgrading road infrastructure in Dodoma.
Responding to a supplementary question, the Deputy Minister said the government aims to develop a modern capital city, which has necessitated consistent funding over the past five years to strengthen infrastructure. He added that through the Dodoma Integrated Transport System, feeder and peripheral roads will also be improved.
Dodoma, designated as Tanzania’s capital in 1974, has undergone significant changes to accommodate its growing population and administrative functions. Over the years, the government has prioritized infrastructure development to support urbanization, with road construction being a key focus area to enhance connectivity and accessibility within the city. The recent allocation reflects ongoing efforts to address the challenges posed by rapid urban expansion and to ensure that the city’s infrastructure keeps pace with its growth.
