Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA has been announced as one of the seven UN Member States that will form the Generation Equality Multi-Stakeholder Leadership Group of the Generation Equality Forum (GEF).
The UNWomen Executive Director, Ms Sima Bahous announced this in the UNWomen in the margins of the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly attended by Heads of the State.
The meeting attracted representatives from diverse actors worldwide, including governments, civil society and youth organisations, the UN system, the private sector and philanthropists.
The other member states that form the Multi-Stakeholder Leadership Group include France, Georgia, Mexico, South Africa, Sweden and the United States of America, buttressed by 14 other actors from the private sector, civil society and other key gender equality stakeholders.
Ms Bahous stated that the Multi-Stakeholder Leadership Group was established to help UN Women drive the Generation Equality Forum, which manifested in six action coalitions which include Gender-Based Violence, Economic Justice and Rights, Bodily autonomy and sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
Others are Feminist Action for Climate Justice, Technology and Innovation for Gender Equality and Feminist Movements and Leadership.
The Generation Equality Forum (GEF) was launched in 2021 in France, aiming at accelerating progress for gender equality and women’s rights by 2026 amid the Beijing Platform of Action assessment.
A statement availed to the media on Saturday said that Tanzania has demonstrated a profound commitment to the agenda. President Samia Suluhu has been branded as the champion for Generation Equality Forum action coalition number two, focusing on Economic Justice and Rights.
It said several vital steps have been taken in the country in pushing forward women’s economic rights and empowerment since the launch of the Generation Equality Forum.
They include establishing the National Advisory Committee by President Samia Suluhu Hassan in December 2021.
Further to this, a country-wide programme has been formulated to optimise the goal, including, among other actions, increasing investments in the creation of decent care jobs; expanding decent work; broadening women’s access to and control over land and other productive resources; and develop and implement economic plans, budget reforms and stimulus packages to reduce the number of women and girls living in poverty by the year 2026.
Over 2,000 commitments were made under six action coalitions, including the action coalition on Economic Justice and Rights, to which Tanzania has committed. With over US$ 40 billion in financial commitments against the Global Acceleration Plan globally.
As a part of the Multi-Stakeholder Leadership Group, Tanzania will play an active role, beyond its national commitments toward Generation Equality Forum, to advise and shape GEF accountability, processes, and impact across all other Action Coalitions over the next four years.
