Tanzania bans fertilizer exports to stabilize local supply

Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has shut down the export of fertilizer with immediate effect in an attempt to stabilize supply of the key agro-input, currently threatening to disrupt planting season due to its acute shortage among majority rural farmers.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa announced the government decision in the National Assembly Friday as he directed regional authorities bordering neighboring countries to open doors for any potential supplier.

The demand for phosphate was projected at 698,260 tonnes during the 2021/22 farming season.

Until October, the supply was recorded at around 333,903 tonnes with an average spending pegged at 430,000 tons per annum.
