Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzanian government has announced plans to construct communication towers in 280 underserved villages across the country in the 2025/26 financial year.
The project will be backed by the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF).
Tabling the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology’s 2025/26 budget estimates in the National Assembly on Friday, the Minister, Mr Jerry Silaa, said the move aims to address persistent challenges in accessing mobile communication services in rural areas.
“In the 2025/26 fiscal year, the Fund plans to construct telecom towers in 280 villages facing difficulties in accessing mobile networks,” Mr Silaa said.
He said the Fund also aims to enhance coverage of Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) radio services in four regions where signal reception has been problematic.
According to the minister, UCSAF expects to collect 64.2bn/- from its revenue sources, which include service levies and allocations from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).
Mr Silaa emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring inclusive and affordable communication services to all Tanzanians as part of national efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote socio-economic development in rural communities.
