Tanzania Renews Efforts to Promote Kiswahili in Malawi

Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzanian High Commissioner to Malawi, Agnes Richard Kayola, has undertaken a working visit to the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) to discuss plans to introduce Kiswahili studies at the institution through a collaboration with Mzumbe University of Tanzania.

During the visit, Ambassador Kayola held discussions with MUBAS leadership, including the Dean of the School of Education, Communication and Media Studies, Dr. Kizito Kanyoma, and the Head of the Department of Languages and Communication, Dr. Flemmings Ngwira. She also met Dr. Maria Kanigi, a lecturer from Mzumbe University who is currently teaching Swahili at the University of Malawi as a part-time lecturer.

In their discussions, MUBAS and Mzumbe University agreed to prepare a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will be signed by both institutions once finalized.

Currently, Mzumbe University is offering Swahili as an international language in Malawi under a four-year agreement between the university and the University of Malawi (UNIMA). Implementation of the agreement began in September 2025, and the first semester of Kiswahili instruction has been completed.

This initiative is part of Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to advance Economic Diplomacy by promoting and expanding the use of the Kiswahili language beyond its national borders.
