Africa-Press – Tanzania. The Secretary General of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party in Tanzania announced the selection of the Minister of Energy as the candidate for the new vice president, following the current vice president’s resignation after less than a year in office.
The resigning vice president, Emmanuel John Nchimbi, will leave his position on September 4, after having held the office since November of last year. His resignation came after criticism from some party members regarding his statements about the constitution last month, which they deemed unnecessary.
The Secretary General of the ruling party, Asha-Rose Migiro, informed reporters that the party’s National Executive Committee has chosen Diodorus Ndigimbi as the candidate for the next vice president.
Migiro stated that the National Executive Committee unanimously approved the appointment of the mentioned member to the vice presidency. This will occur after completing the necessary constitutional procedures to submit his name to parliament. She added that Ndigimbi will take the oath of office after parliamentary approval.
She also mentioned that the ruling party decided to expel Nchimbi from the party “due to his behavior that violated our regulations regarding discipline and ethics.” The nature of this behavior that contravened party rules was not clarified.
Last month, Nchimbi urged Tanzanians to fight for a new constitution, “a constitution that leads us towards development, not only material and economic development but also the dignity of every individual living in Tanzania and their human value.”
President Samia Suluhu Hassan won the presidential elections held last year with nearly 98% of the votes, in elections marred by violent incidents.
