Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA is set to benefit from more than over 15m US dollars in environmental financing through the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in a move aimed at strengthening ecosystem-based solutions to address the impacts of climate change in rural areas.

The funding, amounting to 15,096,716 US dollars, underscores Tanzania’s growing collaboration with global partners in advancing sustainable climate resilience.

The announcement was made during the High-Level Segment of the 7th Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) underway in Nairobi, Kenya. Tanzania is participating in the Assembly as one of the UN member states committed to implementing environmental agreements and global climate priorities.

Under the approved interventions, a major focus will be directed to the Wami to Ruvu River Basin, where projects will support ecosystem restoration and the sustainable management of vital water catchments. The basin is among the country’s most important ecological zones, supplying water to key agricultural, industrial and urban centres.

In addition to basin restoration, various rural communities across Morogoro, Dodoma, Pwani, Arusha, Simiyu and Mara regions are expected to benefit from targeted initiatives aimed at addressing environmental challenges. These include land degradation, deforestation, declining water resources and climate variability, which continue to affect livelihoods in vulnerable areas.

The funding package reflects Tanzania’s ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and its active role in global climate forums. It also reaffirms UNEP’s support for member states in strengthening resilience through nature-based solutions that promote sustainable development and long-term ecological stability.
