Africa-PressTanzania. TANZANIA has emerged the first runner up in the world and winner in Africa in the 2020 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) competition coordinated by Huawei in 14 centres established in various universities in the country.

This was revealed by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dr Faustine Ndugulile on his welcoming note to Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, while presenting prizes to the winners.

Dr Ngugulile said the victory is a clear reflection of the vision of President John Magufuli, who decided to form the new ministry that is responsible for fostering development in Information Communication and Technology and the national income at large.

“President Magufuli has prioritised and noted the importance of ICT on day to day operation of the government activities, in serving the public as well as ensuring the contribution of the sector in the national income,” said the minister.

According to him, establishment of the Communication and Information Technology ministry would help the government to properly supervise the ICT sector. for it to further contribute in the national development.

Speaking during the event, the Prime Minister reiterated the government’s full commitment on installing the national broadband infrastructure across the country, with the aim of expanding the network to 80 per cent by the year 2025 form 45 per cent currently.

“The government will prioritise innovation and research on ICT development as well as registering local experts for the country to match with the global technological advancement,” he said.

On way forward, Mr Majaliwa challenged the ICT companies to borrow a leaf from Huawei Company by investing and supporting the innovative youth.

He also urged Tanzanians to use ICT on productive activities that would enable them to earn income for individuals and national benefit.

Present at the event, the Minister for Education, Science and Technology Prof Joyce Ndalichako said the government will continue working together with stakeholders on developing and enhancing science and technology in higher education institutions.
