Africa-Press – Tanzania. OVER 13,000 students have returned to school through non-formal education, which has successfully changed their lives after acquiring the desired knowledge.

That was revealed today, August 25, 2025, by the Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adolf Mkenda, during the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Institute of Adult Education(IAE) in Dar Es Salaam.

Professor Mkenda made this statement during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Institute of Adult Education, held at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam. The event’s guest of honour was Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa.

He emphasized that the institute provides education outside the formal system, which helps individuals gain skills to tackle environmental and life challenges. He also announced his intention to register and learn through IAE.

“This institute has been doing excellent work, and I’ve seen the significant impact of its efforts in empowering people with skills beyond the formal education system. This has helped many, for example, even after retirement, one can learn how to maintain a garden or do skilled carpentry. I also feel it is important to join and acquire such skills,” Professor Mkenda stressed.

Additionally, he noted that the institute’s major achievements stem from a directive by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, which advocates for all students who dropped out of school for various reasons to be given a second chance at education. Many have since returned and benefited from non-formal education, transforming their lives through these skill-based programs.

“So far, over 13,000 students have returned to school through non-formal education and have successfully changed their lives after acquiring this knowledge,” Professor Mkenda added.

He encouraged Tanzanians, including those with higher education, to enroll in the Institute of Adult Education (IAE) to acquire lifelong learning and practical skills that are relevant to their lives and environments.
