Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE public has been urged to take advantage of waste recycling as a means of launching various economic projects, given that waste can serve as a valuable raw material for other uses and help reduce economic hardships.

The call was made today in Dar es Salaam by the Assistant Director of the Environment Department in the Vice President’s Office, Thomas Chali, while addressing journalists during the climax of the World Environment Day celebrations. The event took place in the Masaki area and included a clean-up exercise at Coco Beach.

Speaking at the same event, the Director of Compliance and Enforcement at the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), Jamali Baruti, said their statistics show that 29,000 tonnes of plastic waste contribute to environmental pollution and endanger marine life. He emphasized that the main source of this pollution is the use of plastic materials.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Representative in Tanzania, Clara Makenya, along with Sarah Pima, Director of the environmental civil society organization Hudefo, said the goal of the World Environment Day celebrations is to educate youth about the opportunities available in waste recycling. They advised the government to ensure the collection of accurate data to support informed decision-making in addressing the plastic pollution crisis in the country.
