Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzanian government, through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), has reported remarkable progress in implementing the National Strategy for Clean Cooking Energy Use (2024–2034) to its various institutions.

By educating, promoting, and facilitating the adoption of clean cooking energy among personnel and soldiers of the National Service (JKT), Tanzania has so far reached 76 percent of its target, according to the report.

Speaking during the official opening of training on clean energy use for JKT camps held at the 834KJ Youth Mess in Makutupora, Dodoma, the Acting Head of the JKT Administration Branch, Colonel Juma Mrai, representing the Chief of the National Service, said the initiative is in line with the directives of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan. The President has emphasized that all institutions serving over 100 people must shift from dirty fuels to clean cooking energy.

“REA has supported JKT up to 76 percent, equivalent to 4.37bn/-n, in implementing clean energy projects in 22 camps by providing 60 briquette-making machines, 291 improved cookstoves, 180 LPG systems with appropriate cooking pots, 220 tons of alternative charcoal, training for 50,000 youth, and 9 biogas systems,” said Colonel Mrai.

He commended REA for its efforts in protecting the environment and reducing health risks associated with the dependence on unclean energy. He also urged targeted personnel to receive adequate training to effectively use the provided technologies, address challenges, and maximize the benefits in their respective areas.

On her part, the REA Director of Renewable and Alternative Energy Technologies, Engineer Advera Mwijage, stated that the training aims to build the capacity of officers and soldiers in the beneficiary camps so they can become effective ambassadors of clean cooking energy in their workplaces.

“This training contributes to the long-term sustainability of clean cooking energy use by equipping participants with the necessary skills to manage the systems efficiently,” she added.

Engineer Mwijage also praised the National Service for its effective project implementation and pledged continued collaboration to ensure the project is completed on time.

Additionally, she revealed that REA has already approved over 800m/- to provide 7,000 JKT personnel with 15kg LPG cylinders and double-burner stoves as part of a broader initiative to promote individual adoption of clean cooking energy.
