Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Arabica coffee, which is grown in Tarime District, Mara region, has shined in the Tanzania Fine Coffees Competition 2021, recogising and awarding Wakulima wa Mara Cooperative Union (WAMACU) famers’ union as a force to reckon with in the country.
“Thanks God that we have been able to maintain the top quality of Arabica coffee and WAMACU coffee is now the best,” WAMACU Board Chairman Mr David Hechei told the ‘Daily News’ over the phone, after he received a trophy and a certificate for the victory from Tanzania Coffee Board (TCB) in Moshi.
WAMACU clinched the first position in Arabica’s best natural taste category, he said. On his side, WAMACU General Secretary Mr Samwel Gisiboye said: “We are so excited and this is a victory for Mara region as a whole.” WAMACU’s main task at this time is to collect coffee from farmers through the Primary Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) and market it.
Elaborating, he noted that the Arabica coffee grown in Tarime is reportedly soliciting a great demand in the world market with players in the sector associating it to its super natural taste.
“Buyers from the US and UK are now directly placing order to buy Arabica from Tarime. Last year, we sold coffee to a UK company called Continental Trade Commodity Services (CTCS) and this year we have sold to an American company called Volcafe through Tylor Winch,” Mr Gisiboye further told the ‘Daily News’ in an exclusive interview recently.
In a related development, a few months ago the union paid 113m/- in the second payment to coffee farmers being part of the arrears it owes them for the previous season
