SENIOR officials from the National Independent Electoral Commission (THNEC) have continued their nationwide visits to various prisons to inspect the ongoing exercise of updating the Permanent Voter Register. The exercise is part of the preparations for the upcoming General Election scheduled for October this year.
Commission Member and High Court Judge, Hon. Asina Omari, today visited Isanga, Msalato, and Kondoa Prisons in Dodoma Region, where she inspected the implementation of the voter registration update exercise for remandees and convicted inmates. During the visit, Hon. Judge Omari expressed satisfaction with the level of participation by eligible inmates and the supervision provided by Commission officials in those areas.
Meanwhile, another Commission Member, Hon. Magdalena Rwebangira, visited Kilimo Mollo Prison and Sumbawanga Remand Prison in Sumbawanga Municipality, Rukwa Region. While at the facilities, Hon. Rwebangira emphasized the importance of ensuring that every qualified inmate is given the opportunity to register without barriers, underscoring the constitutional right of every Tanzanian to participate in the democratic process.
At the same time, the Chairperson of the National Independent Electoral Commission, Court of Appeal Judge Jacobs Mwambegele, visited Bitimba Maximum Security Prison in Mwanza Region. He met with prison authorities, including the Officer-in-Charge of Bitimba Prison, ACP Pascal Temba, and the Mwanza Regional Prisons Commander, SACP Masoud Kimolo. This visit is part of a series of inspection and follow-up meetings aimed at ensuring the effective implementation of this crucial exercise in preparation for a free and fair election.
The third round of the second phase of updating the Permanent Voter Register is currently underway for remandees, inmates, and students sentenced to less than six months in prisons across Mainland Tanzania and Reform Institutions in Zanzibar. The exercise began on June 28, 2025, and is scheduled to conclude on July 4, 2025, running for a total of seven consecutive days.
This voter register update aims to ensure that all eligible citizens — including inmates who meet the legal criteria — are granted the opportunity to participate in the anticipated General Election later this year, in accordance with their constitutional rights.
The National Independent Electoral Commission reiterates the importance of inclusive participation by all eligible citizens and will continue to oversee the process closely to ensure every stage is conducted with professionalism, transparency, and fairness.
