Africa-Press – Tanzania. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has issued a five-day weather alert, warning of heavy rains and strong winds in several regions.
Forecast regions according to TMA include Dar es Salaam, Kagera, Simiyu, Mara, Shinyanga, and Mwanza.
The alert, which takes effect today, Wednesday, May 7, 2025, indicates the likelihood of downpours accompanied by winds reaching up to 40 kilometres per hour, and ocean waves as high as two metres.
According to TMA, the regions expected to experience heavy rainfall from today include Kagera, Geita, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Simiyu, and Mara.
“A strong wind warning of up to 40 km/h and ocean waves reaching two metres has been issued for parts of the entire coastal strip along the Indian Ocean,” reads part of the authority’s statement.
“This includes Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Coast (including Mafia Islands), Lindi, and Mtwara, as well as the islands of Unguja and Pemba,” adds the document.
TMA cautioned that the weather conditions could lead to flooding in residential areas and disrupt key economic activities, including fishing and marine transport.
On Thursday, May 8, heavy rain is forecast for parts of Dar es Salaam and Coast Region, including Mafia Islands, alongside Unguja and Pemba islands.
The warning for strong winds and high waves remains in effect for the same coastal areas: Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Coast (including Mafia), and Lindi.
On Friday, May 9, TMA expects heavy rain in some parts of Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Coast (including Mafia), Lindi, Mtwara, and the islands of Unguja and Pemba.
Heavy rains are again forecast on Saturday, May 10, in parts of Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Coast (including Mafia Islands), Lindi, Mtwara, and the islands of Unguja and Pemba.
On Sunday, May 11, no rainfall or strong winds are expected anywhere in the country, according to the TMA.
