Tonombe apologises for red card offence

Africa-PressTanzania. YOUNG Africans midfielder Mukoko Tonombe has apologised for the misconduct which saw him receiving marching orders during the Azam Sports Federation Cup (ASFC) finals over the weekend.

The Congolese midfielder elbowed Simba captain John Bocco in the 43rd minute of the first half an incident which saw the former picking a straight red card hence the turning point of the tense historic match at Lake Tanganyika Stadium in Kigoma.

Following the incident, Tonombe had to be stretched off the pitch as he injured his elbow while his colleague was briefly treated and returned to action. However, writing on his official Instagram page, Tonombe said: “I take this opportunity to apologise to management, technical bench and fans on what happened during our final game against Simba. “I did not plan to be given the red card which perhaps was the reason we lost the match. I like my team Yanga very much.”

Tonombe’s send off was a salt on fresh wound for Yanga as they seemingly lost midfield battle thereby enabling champions Simba to easily enjoy the game by pressing hard their opponents.

It was, however his first red card in Yanga colours which came at a bad timing when his side needed to produce a victory to win the prestigious ASFC trophy in front of their long time traditional rivals.

As Yanga struggled to cope with the tempo of the game while playing with 10-men, Simba simply utilised well the deficit to score the much needed goal late in the second half via Ugandan midfielder Taddeo Lwanga.

This was the third traditional derby in the past season whereby the first meeting in the Premier League ended in a 1-1 draw, the second tie ended 1-0 in favour of Yanga and the recent 1-0 outcome in the ASFC went Simba’s way.

The two sides will meet again in the Community Shield match to officially mark the start of the 2021/22 Mainland Premier League season with Simba the current defending champions
