Africa-Press – Tanzania. From At least 1,060 tour guides across the country have benefitted from professional training, courtesy of Covid-19 funds.
Speaking here recently during the launch of tour-guides training, College of Wildlife Management (CAWM-Mweka) Rector Jaffar Kideghesho, said the funds offered through the Tanzania Covid-19 Socioeconomic Response Plan (TCRP) facilitated the training of tour guides to enable them remain relevant in the field.
According to Prof Kideghesho, it is important to train tour guides as they are always at the front of raising awareness among travellers and local communities.
“Therefore they must demonstrate sustainable travel behaviour that encourages towards protecting the destination resources,” asserted the Mweca Rector.
Such training, according to Prof Kideghesho, is a clear indication on how the government values tourism and hospitality industries as far as their contributions to the Gross Domestic Product and foreign currency is concerned.
“Apart from being tour guides, they also take roles of health workers when tourists face health challenges,” explained.
The Mweka Rector further noted that through such training, the guides will be made familiar with the most up-to-date public health guidelines and will adhere to these for the duration of the tour.
The training brought together experts from CAWM-Mweka, was conducted at Saadani National Park, Ruaha National Park, Burigi Chato National Park, Tarangire National Park and the Rungwe Nature Reserve.
Authorities in the country are implementing a comprehensive response TCRP to mitigate the health and socioeconomic effects of the pandemic.
TCRP encompasses the National Deployment and Vaccination Plan, an outline of the country’s agenda of vaccinating 20 per cent of the population with COVAX
