Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA Prisons Service (TPS) employees in Simiyu Region are set to receive discounted gas cylinders and cooking stoves, thanks to a new initiative by the Rural Energy Agency (REA) and Oryx Gas Tanzania Limited (OGTL).

The initiative that was officially launched on Tuesday in Bariadi District aims to transition all TPS employees from using charcoal and firewood to clean cooking gas.

Through this initiative, Oryx Gas is providing 15kg gas cylinders, double-burner stoves and their accessories at a significant discount. The government, through REA, has covered the initial cost for the officers and staff.

Rural Energy Board (REB), Board Member, Lucas Malunde, commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for implementing the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy.

“Since its launch on May 8, 2024, the government has taken several initiatives to ensure Tanzanians use clean cooking energy, which protects the environment and reduces deaths caused by unsafe cooking methods,” said Mr Malunde.

On his part, Mr Peter Ndomba, Manager of clean cooking projects from OGTL, said the company, in partnership with its main distributor in Simiyu Region, has provided a permanent discount for every officer who benefited from the project.

“When the gas cylinder runs out, it will be refilled at an affordable price. This discount also includes home delivery as soon as the gas is finished. The distribution of cylinders has been accompanied by training on the safe use of gas.

“This is part of Oryx Gas’s policy to offer training on safe gas use to every Oryx cylinder user. We have always ensured that every Oryx gas user remains safe and in line with that, we have provided education on safe gas use and will continue with this approach at all times.”

Earlier, Engineer Emmanuel Yesaya, Acting Technical Support Manager for Investment Projects at REA, said that a total of 330 units—each comprising a 15kg Oryx Gas cylinder and a double-burner cooker— have been distributed to prison staff in Simiyu Region.

Simiyu Regional Prisons Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Prisons (SACP) Lugano Msomba, thanked the government through REA and Oryx Gas for enabling prison staff to access clean cooking energy. He pledged that the staff will serve as ambassadors for the campaign.
