Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Board of Accountants and Auditors (NBAA) to establish a formal partnership aimed at integrating their systems and facilitating the sharing of essential information to enhance tax collection efforts.

Speaking during the signing of the five-year MoU on Friday, TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Mwenda said the agreement would improve decision-making accuracy, as a number of decisions like tax assessment determinations rely heavily on information.

“The sharing of information will greatly assist us in fulfilling our responsibilities, particularly with the NBAA, as the majority of tax consultants registered with TRA are members of NBAA. Today marks a milestone for TRA and we aim to advance this collaboration,” said Mr Mwenda.

He added that some taxpayers have expressed concerns about the accuracy of the information used, saying that reliable data would enable the authority to make informed decisions, thereby reducing disputes and addressing various issues for taxpayers.

Mr Mwenda explained that the agreement would allow TRA to support tax consultants, many of whom are members of the NBAA in meeting their legal obligations. This move comes in response to growing complaints from taxpayers about certain consultants failing to fulfill their responsibilities effectively.

He noted that through the collaboration, TRA will be able to monitor the conduct of tax consultants via their respective professional bodies, ensuring adherence to ethical standards and taking action, including deregistration, against those who do not comply.

“Some tax consultants have been accused of advising clients in ways that, upon audit, prove inconsistent with taxpayers’ claims. This puts taxpayers in a difficult position, as they often rely on professional advice that should be timely, accurate and based on adequate knowledge and experience,” Mr Mwenda explained.
