Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA has reiterated its commitment to supporting both regional and international efforts to restore lasting peace in the war-torn eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

As the current chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, Tanzania has pledged to continue playing a pivotal role in ensuring stability in eastern DRC.

The assurance was given by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thatib Kombo, during the Joint Meeting of the East African Community (EAC) and the SADC held earlier this week in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The meeting focused on the state of peace and security in the mineral-rich African nation.

Ambassador Kombo, who led Tanzania’s delegation, said that Tanzania has consistently been at the forefront of seeking peaceful solutions to the conflicts, a legacy that dates back to the country’s founding father, the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

He noted the importance of fully implementing resolutions reached at such meetings to ensure a secure environment for the citizens of the region.

“I commend President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, for proposing the unification of these major regional organisations—EAC and SADC—to collectively find lasting solutions.

We support the Luanda and Nairobi peace processes,” said Ambassador Kombo.

The meeting, which was aimed to evaluate the ongoing regional peace efforts in eastern DR Congo, also resolved to implement all agreements to ensure the safety of the people in the region, allowing them to resume their daily
