UEFA Boss Defends New Format and Warns of Football’S ‘Vicious Circle’

Africa-Press – Tanzania. In an interview with SportMediaset, UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin expressed strong satisfaction with the revamped Champions League format.

He hailed this season as “fantastic,” pointing to the excitement and unpredictability that emerged, particularly on the final day of the group stage. He noted that even traditionally skeptical voices are beginning to acknowledge the entertainment value of the changes. Using PSG’s narrow escape from early elimination as an example, Čeferin emphasized the drama and competitiveness the new system has delivered.

However, Čeferin also addressed growing concerns about the congested football calendar, particularly with the expanded Club World Cup on the horizon.

Acknowledging the paradox of player burnout versus clubs’ financial needs, he highlighted the delicate balance UEFA must manage. “The calendar is full, but clubs want more matches to generate revenue, while players are increasingly at risk,” he explained. Čeferin described it as a “vicious circle” that reflects the broader tension between sporting integrity, player welfare, and financial sustainability in modern football.
