THE British Embassy in Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to support Tanzania’s environmental protection and climate change initiatives through closer collaboration with the Vice-President’s Office.
The pledge was made during a meeting held in Dar es Salaam between Permanent Secretary in the Vice-President’s Office (Union and Environment) Richard Muyungi and the Head of the Sustainable Environment Programme from the UK Embassy in Tanzania, Euan Davidson.
During the meeting, Dr Muyungi outlined the government’s commitment to implementing national strategies aimed at addressing climate change and strengthening environmental conservation.
He said the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan has developed comprehensive plans that require close collaboration with development partners to ensure successful implementation.
Among the priorities highlighted were initiatives under the National Development Vision 2050, particularly the pillar focusing on environmental conservation and climate resilience.
Dr Muyungi also emphasised the country’s efforts to develop carbon trading systems as part of global climate mitigation measures.
“Tanzania has already put in place regulations and guidelines for carbon trading and the National Carbon Monitoring Centre is operational with a board and technical committee to oversee projects,” he said.
The centre is expected to play a key role in monitoring carbon projects and supporting Tanzania’s participation in global carbon markets.
The Permanent Secretary also highlighted ongoing national efforts to promote clean cooking energy technologies across communities as part of the government’s broader environmental agenda.
According to him, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on traditional cooking fuels while improving environmental protection and public health.
Mr Davidson reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s readiness to collaborate with Tanzania on initiatives related to the Blue Economy, carbon markets, clean energy technologies and broader climate mitigation efforts.
“The UK Embassy stands ready to support Tanzania in implementing its climate and green energy plans,” he said.
The partnership is expected to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in addressing climate change, promoting sustainable development and supporting Tanzania’s transition toward a greener economy
