Ulega tasks schools to take sports seriously

Africa-PressTanzania. THE government has stressed on need for Tanzanian schools to take sport activities seriously so as to nurture different talents to be later incorporated in various flagship sport disciplines.

This was said recently in Dodoma by the Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Abdallah Ulega where he cemented that some schools do not respect time tables for sport lessons.

“It is sad to learn that some schools allow children to move randomly during sport lessons without letting them to actively participate something which is not encouraged. “We will keenly look into this issue to identify such schools which deliberately skip sport lessons by considering them as unproductive to their learners,” he said.

He added that the target of the government is to bring back glory old days when schools were the backbone for producing competitive athletes who used to excel in various national and international sport events.

“Many Tanzanians demand such good old days to come back again and in order to achieve that, we need to correct somewhere and empower the existing schools,” Ulega noted.

Moreover, Ulega narrated that time has come to strongly drum up for the re-establishment of the Inter Primary and Secondary School games which he said give platform for the learners to select the sport discipline they are interested to feature.

“We will soon embark on a mission to inspect schools and see if they take sport lessons seriously or else, if they do not, they will be held accountable to the government,” said he.

Recently, the state announced that all flag carrier sport envoys will be fully supported in terms of proper preparations and other necessary factors so that when they go to the competing area, doing well should be within their reach.

This gesture was positively received by pundits who pointed out that in most cases, teams which represent the country in major events do not receive the required backup from the government apart from handing them the national flag, saying that tendency lead to poor performance.
