Africa-PressTanzania. THE United Nations Resident Coordinator in Tanzania Zlatan Milisic has paid a courtesy call on President Hussein Mwinyi, at Vuga area in Zanzibar.

During their talks, Dr Mwinyi commended the UN for its commitment to continue supporting the Zanzibar government in economic growth and enhancing the well-being of its citizens.

“The Government is continuing its efforts to strengthen the economy with priority being given on implementation of the Blue Economy plans and policies.

This has been possible due to the prevailing peace and stability built through the Government of National Unity (GNU),” Dr Mwinyi said Dr Mwinyi said that the formation of the GNU had made Zanzibar to become politically, economically and socially stable, expressing hope to further strengthen the existing partnership.

He pointed out that while Zanzibar was remaining stable, the emergence of COVID-19 in the World has led to the deterioration of tourism business, a sector that boosts GDP and Zanzibar economy.

Dr Mwinyi expressed the need for the UN to continue supporting Zanzibar in improving the health sector especially in infrastructure, services delivery and operational systems. “We need continued support in the fight against maternal and child mortality.

Thanks to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNICEF) which has been a major partner in Zanzibar in supporting the health sector, but nevertheless, concerted efforts are needed to achieve the intended goals,” he stressed.

In addition, the President expressed the need for the UNESCO to ensure that it was conserving and maintaining Zanzibar city which is the World Heritage Site, as some of the houses in the city need to be rehabilitated.

President Dr Mwinyi said that, Zanzibar was currently working to support pilgrims to meet the requirements for attending pilgrimage in Mecca including vaccination.

In response, Mr Milisic, said his mission was to assist Zanzibar in achieving development goals.
