US firm in Dar to flavour SGR cuisine

Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has been directed to expand modern services at Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) stations to better serve travelers and boost economic activity.

Transport Minister Professsor Makame Mbarawa issued the directive today, while inaugurating KFC SGR Station restaurant at the Dar es Salaam SGR station.

The arrival of the world-class restaurant at the hyper modern SGR Station assures travelers an opportunity to enjoy high-quality catering services from the internationally-recognized firm.

As of 2024, KFC had over 29,000 restaurants in more than 145 countries and territories. KFC is one of the most well-known quick service restaurant (QSR) brands in the world.

The first KFC opened in the United States in 1952.

The first overseas KFC opened in the United Kingdom in 1965.KFC expanded into the Caribbean and Western markets in the early 1970s.

KFC expanded into Africa to target the continent’s growing middle class.

During its official opening, Professor Mbarawa emphasized the need for additional services, including financial facilities, to cater to passengers’ needs.

Adding, he said the presence of KFC Restaurant at the station will boost economic activities by promoting locally sourced products, creating jobs, and providing skill-building opportunities for Tanzanian youth.

“KFC has created new employment opportunities, particularly for young people. I have been informed that the company employs and trains over 800 youth, equipping them with essential skills in hospitality, food service, and management. This ensures that travelers can now enjoy high-quality, internationally recognized meals,” he said.

Ilala District Commissioner Mr Edward Mpogolo, representing Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Mr Albert Chalamila, commended TRC’s leadership for welcoming investors, noting that such partnerships contribute to national economic growth.

“We appreciate TRC Director General of the Tanzania Railways Corporation for his openness to investment. Many would hesitate to allow food businesses inside a station building, but he has embraced the idea, fostering economic progress,” Mpogolo stated.

TRC Director General Mr Masanja Kadogosa reaffirmed TRC’s commitment to supporting investments within the SGR project, highlighting the significance of such ventures in enhancing service delivery.

On his part, Dough Works Limited Managing Director, Mr Vikram Desai, said the new restaurant will create jobs, provide training, and contribute to the country’s economy.

“We take pride in bringing this globally recognized brand to Tanzanian travelers while creating employment, empowering communities, and supporting economic growth,” he said.
