Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has reiterated its commitment to continue relying on policy dialogue and researches on competitive manufacturing and trade for the benefit of the people and nation.

Calling for a workshop to be held on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam themed: ‘Transforming Tanzania’s Economy Through Competitive Manufacturing and Trade,’ the Ministry of Industry and Trade Permanent Secretary, Dotto James said it will be graced by the Vice-President, Dr Philip Mpango.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, he further said it will be organised in collaboration with REPOA, adding, “The workshop which will be live streaming is expected to give room and access to majority to attend and the keynote speaker will be Prof Justin Yifu Lin, a renowned economist of international repute.”

He said Prof Lin is the Founder of the Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University and has previously served as the Chief Economist of the World Bank.

Mr James said the workshop seeks to provoke and promote policy dialogue and research on competitive manufacturing and trade, as vital subsectors accelerating economic growth and as catalyst for structural transformation.

“Structural transformation is a key enabler to creating the needed jobs for youth, reducing poverty, and for sustaining economic resilience to various shocks” he said.

The PS further said that REPOA’s Annual Research Workshops are the largest and highest-level development policy gatherings in the country, adding that it brings together researchers, policy makers, development partners, CSOs, and academia from the country and beyond to discuss development issues as informed by research-based evidence and experience.

Some 200 invited participants are expected to attend this year’s workshop, but because of the travel restrictions due to Covid-19, foreign invitees will participate virtually through online platforms.

Mr James said the theme of this year’s workshop is timely as it links well with the thrust of the Third Five Year Development Plan that emphasizes on continued efforts to transform the economy, to enhance national competitiveness, and to improve the human development.

On his part REPOA Executive Director, Donald Mmari said competitive manufacturing and trade are the key drivers of structural transformation and growth. “And this explains our ongoing partnership with the Ministry of Industry and Trade for this workshop and many other researches and capacity building programmes on this subject.” he underscored.

The workshop will be attended by senior officials from the Government of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.
