AfricaPress-Tanzania: ALL is set as the Waitara Golf Trophy scheduled to tee off today at the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club of Dar es Salaam.

Seven senior Army Officers from Malawi including the Commander Defence Forces, General Vincent Nundwe are among the golfers going to brighten this year’s tournament.

Malawians arrived in the city on Thursday and were welcomed by General (rtd) George Waitara who complimented them for making plans to join Tanzanians in the event.

“They promised to come and they have done it, we thank them for this cooperation, golf makes us close and has cemented our brotherhood, the army has shown the way and we think the civilians from the two countries will join us later,” said Waitara who is among the player to tee off today.

Malawian Major General Chikukwa Esoko who led the team said General Nundwa was due to arrive yesterday and he and his mates will take the event seriously.

Esoko added: “We always say if we as a military can work together it is for the good of the two nations and we shall lead the way into action. This is our second time after first 2019 and since then our colleagues from here came to Malawi. “We will continue acting this way and through golf we thought its good thing and golf is a good forum for Generals to be in the act,” added Esoko.

Senior golfer Edmund Mndolwa has utilised the opportunity to appeal Tanzania leaders to come forward and embrace the game as it is good for networking and health well-being.

The 18-hole tournament that was initially set for November last year was postponed twice due to the death of the Waitara’s mother as organisers wanted him to be part of it.

Lugalo Chairman Michael Luwongo told the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ that everything is in place for the event to tee off.

Over 150 golfers include those from Malawi and across the country are ready to battle for the 18 holes stroke play showdown.

Explaining further on the tournament, Luwongo said that the prestigious club competition is organised to honour Waitara, who is the founder of the par-72 Lugalo Golf course in 2006 and a big golf fan.

It is a stroke play net tournament for men who will be seeking Division A, B and C title while other categories are Senior Players and Ladies.

However, he said that professional golfers, who will be battling it out for the cash prizes, were also invited.

He thanked Serengeti for the tireless support in the club and co-sponsor Tanzania Forest Agency who joined the same this year.
