Africa-PressTanzania. THE Covid-19 pandemic has been one of the greatest health crises in the history of the world. But thanks to rapid advances in science and technology, there is growing optimism that the world is going to defeat this pandemic.

After almost two years of grappling with unbearable socio-economic negative consequences brought by the contagion, nations are slowly finding a breathing space.

Deaths and hospitalizations are slowing down, borders are opening up and economic activities almost back to normalcy.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and this achievement is down to major vaccination efforts, which are currently underway to immunize the world’s population.

Globally, more than 3.19 billion doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered so far, according to figures compiled by Our World in Data.

According to these figures, almost 27% of the world’s population has had both doses, approximately 2.1 billion people. Not a long ago, the future looked bleak. But as everyone of us now looks to the future with great optimism, we should not take anything for granted. Covid-19 is still a threat to people who are unvaccinated.

As President Samia Suluhu Hassan insisted yesterday, Covid-19 vaccines have proved effective in preventing people from becoming seriously ill if they contract the virus. It is a safer way to develop immunity. Tanzanians should ignore Covid-19 vaccine myths.

Covid-19 vaccines are not experimental. They went through all the required stages of clinical trials. Extensive testing and monitoring have shown that these vaccines are safe and effective.

In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) and expert health authorities around the world are urging people to get vaccinated as the best solution to end the pandemic.

The sooner people are immunized, the faster it will be possible not only to slow the spread of the disease, but also to limit its impact on the economy.

According to the WHO, vaccination is a simple, safe and effective way to protect against harmful diseases before coming into contact with them, as it activates the body’s natural defenses to learn to resist specific infections and strengthen the immune system.

Therefore, vaccination against Covid-19 will reduce the risk of becoming seriously ill and dying, since the person will be better protected. It is high time our people realize the importance of being vaccinated.
