Africa-Press – Tanzania. LARGE groups of monkey family have caused huge damage in Rombo District by attacking children, destroying crops and devouring domestic animals.
Rombo Legislator, Professor Adolf Mkenda told the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Damas Ndumbaro that the animals from the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park have caused panic in several villages.
Prof Mkenda who is also the Minister for Agriculture, said the animals have been injuring children and attacking goats and sheep, much to the grief of the residents.
“These wild animals are causing huge damage to the people as they invade and attack children, goats and sheep, something that is dangerous… the government should device a means to send them back to the park without hurting them,” said Prof Mkenda. Kitangara Mrere Councillor, Mr Venance Maleli said the wild animals in question have turned out to be a nuisance, asking the government to take immediate action to help the residents get rid of them before they cause more harm.
In response to the plea, Dr Ndumbaro said the animals cannot be killed because they are among tourist attractions, pleading that the government will find out appropriate ways to make sure they return to the national park. He directed Tanzania Wildlife Authority (TAWA) to work on the matter by getting the wild animals back to the park.
