Zungu Orders Minister to Address Fuel Price Surge

Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Speaker of Parliament, Mussa Zungu, has directed the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, to meet with the Parliamentary Committee on Energy to discuss the recent surge in fuel prices in the country.

Zungu issued the directive today, April 1, 2026, while adjourning parliamentary proceedings, emphasizing that without a reliable supply of fuel, the implementation of various development plans could be significantly disrupted.

The move follows an announcement by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) regarding new fuel prices. In Dar es Salaam, the price of petrol has increased by 956/- per liter, rising from 2,864/- in March to 3,820/- in April.

Similarly, diesel prices have risen sharply, with one liter now retailing at 3,806/-, up from 2,858/-, an increase of 948/-.

The price hikes have largely been attributed to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The conflict, which began on February 28, 2026, has disrupted global oil supply chains, leading to increased fuel prices internationally.
