AfricaPress-Tanzania: A SPECIAL race to crack down on poaching in Western Serengeti was held in Mara Region last week.

The Serengeti Migration Marathon involved participants mostly conservationists, including Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) and Serengeti National Park members of staff.

Mara Regional Commissioner (RC) Adam Malima, who was expected to be the guest of honour, was represented by Rorya District Commissioner Simon Odunga.

The two-day anti-poaching marathon was organised by Serengeti Tourism College (Setco) through Serengeti Tourism Sports Agency (Setsa).

“The aim was to create anti-poaching awareness and the marathon was very successful. The second day was more interesting because it took place inside the Serengeti ecology,” Setco senior official Samwel Nyankogoti said.

Serengeti National Park Chief Park Warden Masana Mwishawa was among of the top senior conservationists who witnessed the second run at Fort Ikoma.

Besides promoting sustainable conservation and tourism, the marathon aimed at making residents in the wildlife rich district develop interest in sports.

The marathon attracted hundreds of people from all walks of life. Winners, including women, were awarded cash money.

Mr Odunga commended the organiser of the marathon and pledged government support in the next event to be held next year.
