AfricaPress-Tanzania: At least 134 people were killed and 129 other sustained injuries in 164 motorcycle accidents  occurred between January and December 2020.

The Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Hamis Hamza revealed this in the Parliament in Dodoma Thursday morning when he was responding to Musoma Urban MP, Vedastus Mathayo.

In his primary question, On his question, Mr Mathayo sought to know when the government will make an amendment on penalties to distinguish the amount of fine to be charged between motorcycle rider’s alias bodaboda and vehicles.

The lawmaker also wanted to know if the government has a plan to decongest most police stations that are full motorcycles that have been seized due to different offences.

Elaborating the matter, Mr Hamza said the number of accidents involving motorcycles is increasing despite the enforcement of various penalties including 30,000/- fine to those who violate  the  Road Traffic Acts.

On the decongesting the police stations, the Deputy Minister said there is a special procedure to be followed before auctioning any item or goods that have been seized.

“The items have to be auctioned after staying more than six months,” he said.

However, he suggested that the motorcycles should either be sold or auctioned for the government to get revenue.
