AfricaPress-Tanzania: Sombre mood engulfed Zanzibar town and surroundings as mourners failed to hold back their tears when they got an opportunity to say ‘bye’ to the body of fallen iconic leader, Dr John Pombe Magufuli at Amaan Abeid Karume Stadium.
Air Tanzania plane carrying Dr Magufuli’s body left Dodoma Airport at around 8:40 and landed at Sheikh Abeid Aman Karume at around 09:30am.
President of Zanzibar led other government top officials to receive the body of the late Magufuli.
Thousands of Isles residents lined up along the road, from Airport to the stadium, only to wave at a hearse carrying the body to the destination.
Those who were energetic enough others jogged with the convoy from the Airport to the stadium, covering a distance of approximately 9.1km.
The convoy made its way to the historical Abeid Amani Karume Stadium through Kiembe Samaki, Mombasa and MwanaKwerekwe streets.
Addressing the sympathetic multitude at the stadium, Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Mwinyi said the nation had lost a real revolutionist of the century and asked Tanzanians to pray for the gone Magufuli.
