AfricaPress-Tanzania: CONTRACTORS Registration Board (CRB) has advised local contractors to peruse contracts before signing them to avoid losses that may be incurred during the implementation of construction projects.

The precaution was issued in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday by CRB Chairlady Consolata Ngimbwa when opening threeday capacity building training on contract management for more than 100 local contractors.

She said there was a tendency for local contractors to sign contracts without reading carefully and understanding them to find if there was something that might cause trouble during the implementation of the projects.

She said contractors must peruse any contact to satisfy themselves that they were going to implement them without any obstacles and if they found any problem should discuss with their clients to solve them before project implementation.

“It is very common to find that many contractors complaining about the delay of payment, but they should take time to read carefully the contract that contained also a payment model,” urged Ms Ngimbwa She said foreign contractors were very keen when it came to contact signing because they read between the lines and negotiated with their clients if they found anything that could be an obstacle during the implementation of the projects to avoid conflict between them.

“If you are not able to read properly contracts you need to consult an expert who can identify problems that you may face during the implementation of the projects,” she said.

Ms Ngimbwa also sensitised local contractors on joint ventures in pursuing tenders so that they could be able to implement big construction projects.

“Currently, there are a lot of construction opportunities. For example, the construction of a railway line stretch from Isaka in Shinyanga to Mwanza,” she said.

She noted some of public procurement tenders smelt of corruption, which made most of the contractors enter into construction contracts without doing due diligence to satisfy themselves.

One contractor Robi Patrick commended CRB for training which he said had added value to their profession and urged the board to continue with such kind of training regularly.

“Most of us face different challenges as some are not competent in filling in tender and reading contracts so with this kind of training we increase our knowledge and I am sure after this training many of us will do better in the implementation of construction projects,” he said.

CRB organises capacity building training of local contractors all over the country to enable them to sharpen their knowledge and skills in the construction industry
