AfricaPress-Tanzania: IN supporting the government’s efforts to promote ocean based blue economy, the National Institute of Transport (NIT) will in this academic year start offering courses that will include ship building and repair programme.

“The blue economy is very important to economic development and prosperity of all in the country, that’s why we have introduced a diploma in ship building and repair programme,” said the NIT Rector, Prof Zacharia Mganilwa.

Prof Mganilwa said that apart from introducing a diploma programme on ship building and repair in 2020/21 academic year, the Institute will also establish a Bachelor’s Degree in Shipping and Port Logistics Management (BSPLM).

“In 2020/21 academic year, we have also introduced ordinary diploma in shipping and port logistic operations as well as bachelor’s degree in naval architecture, aiming at producing local technicians and engineers who will be capable of building ships,” he said.

“Students wishing to pursue shipping and port logistics operations diploma must have basic technician certificate in related field recognized by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE),” he said.

For ship building and repair diploma course, students are required to have completed form four with minimum of D grade and passes in physics/engineering, science, basic mathematics, chemistry and English.

The Rector noted: “Apart from introducing the maritime courses, we will introduce other courses to support the initiative, including ordinary diploma in road and railway logistics operations as well as bachelor’s degree in road and railway transport logistics management (BRRTLM).”

Eng Mganilwa further said that maritime transport is the linchpin of the economy because it supports commercial flows more efficiency.

Elaborating, Prof Mganilwa said: “We have introduced such courses on road and railway to support the maritime, because the railway and the road are closely coordinated with maritime sector by transporting goods from or to the ports.”

“Apart from those new courses, we will also establish a diploma courses on pipe work, oil and gas engineering which is staged to start in 2020/2021 academic year, and will be a key programme that will generate licensed welders,” the Rector said.

He said the licensed welders will be capable of working in Hoima-Tanga oil pipeline.

In another development, Professor Mganilwa said that their institute is a trainer of technologists and managers who are working in the transport sector to strengthen the national industrialization agenda as a way of contributing to the economic growth.

He pointed out that NIT as a higher learning institution takes deliberate measures to ensure availability and sustainability of local technical and managerial capacity through developing and reviewing training programmes which meet the needs of the transport sector.

“At NIT, we offer logistics transport management programme which support the government’s industrialization drive, knowing that transport is the veins of industrial economy. There are other factors that also lead to industrialization. One of those factors is having enough transport expertise to help the industrialization drive to prosper,” he said, and added that at NIT they are producing enough transport graduates that can feed the new inventions and improved transportation, which will help to bring about industrialization.
