AfricaPress-Tanzania: NMB BANK Southern Region has donated 105 galvanized sheets worth five million shillings to Ligula Referral Hospital in Mtwara Region to assist the management of the hospital to renovate the children’s ward which is currently undergoing maintenance.

Regional Manager, Janeth Shango said the galvanized support is part of NMB’s role in supporting access to quality health care for the community.

He said one of NMB’s roles was to support the community in the health sector by providing a range of medical equipment, maternity beds and ward building materials.

In other sectors such as education, the bank has also been providing support for chairs and desks for students. Late last year NMB Southern Region also donated various items including food to flood victims caused by heavy rains on two consecutive days in Mtwara region.

Receiving the assistance on behalf of the District Commissioner, Dunstan Kyobya, the District Administrative Secretary, Thomas Salala commended the bank for being at the forefront in helping the government and the community at large to improve social services in the region.

“On behalf of our District Commissioner, I would like to congratulate NMB bank. They have been instrumental in helping the government improve various social services. I would like to invite other stakeholders to follow this example of NMB, ”he said.

Speaking on the issue of health at the hospital, Salala assured NMB that the support would go a long way in improving the children’s ward. He said the government is committed to improving health services by increasing staff and ensuring better infrastructure so the NMB support will be a catalyst in supporting the government’s efforts.

Ligula Hospital Chief Physician Lobikieki Kisaambu said the hospital was facing deteriorating infrastructure that did not meet the needs of patients and staff and was affecting the delivery of quality health services and that many buildings had become dilapidated and needed improvement.

He said improvements to the buildings and infrastructure require a total of 3.6 billion shillings. He said one of the buildings in need of renovation is a children’s ward where the renovation requires 24.8 million shillings. The renovation of the ward, which began last year, has reached 50 percent.
