AfricaPress-Tanzania: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has continued to realign various teams of leaders in the country with regional commissioners becoming the latest group of government officials to be touched.

The realignment of leaders, which involves dropping few, retaining some and appointing others, seeks to improve the performance of the government, delivering to the expectations of the general public.

Recently, the President, while addressing Dar es Salaam regional elders, made it clear that she will continue making changes in various leadership teams by appointing any Tanzanian that she is confident of delivering.

Since when she assumed presidency, the Head of State has been emphatically saying that the appointment of any individual to any leadership position will be based on one’s record, meaning that no one will be will be appointed to a role unless they are competent to do it.

Regional commissioners fall in the group of leaders who play a pivotal role in the country’s governance system.

They are simply considered to be the representatives of the president in their areas of administration.

RCs are responsible for execution of government policies, including keeping a close eye on implementation of development projects in their areas of jurisdiction.

In recent years, some regional commissioners have found themselves at loggerheads with their people due to their failure to discharge their responsibility in accordance with the laws, principles, guidelines, rules and regulations.

Though regions are subdivided into districts under which councils are formed, effective and efficient leadership at regional level is an important ingredient for the best performance of local authorities in the country.

Regional commissioners appointed on Saturday by President Samia should take note the Head of State and Tanzanians have confidence in them.

Since leadership means showing the way, we expect RCs to serve the public in their areas with diligence.

In that sense, we don’t expect to see regional commissioners becoming the source of conflicts among civilians in their areas of administration, instead we want to see them spearheading the country’s development agenda.

They should understand that at regional level the buck stops with them.
