AfricaPress-Tanzania: The Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Mashimba Ndaki has asked the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Rashid Tamatama to complete a study of complaints of the 2020 code which has been conducted by the Fish Research Institute (TAFIRI) before March 23 this year.
Speaking on her behalf, Deputy Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Paulina Gekul said the regulations for 2020 have received many complaints from fishermen about 50 meters of sea, ring net fishing.
Gekul urged the secretary general to ensure that all uninvolved fishers are properly involved. He explained that the challenges that have arisen in the implementation of the 2020 fisheries reform regulations the government has decided to review them to meet current needs.
He said the ministry has recently received various comments and challenges from stakeholders in the fishery sector of the Coastal Zone, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Victoria regarding the amendment of the fishery regulation.
Gekul said the areas that have been shown to be most challenging are in daytime net fishing in the Indian Ocean region, the method of measuring the size of the net’s eyes using a standardized measure known as the Mesh Gauge and Seafood fishing during the new moon.
Following these challenges, the Minister of Livestock Mashimba Ndaki recently instructed the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) to conduct research on net fishing and should therefore respond before March 23.
