AfricaPress-Tanzania: TANZANIA’S top lady golfers are on a course to showcase their skills in Morogoro Open Golf tournament that tees off here today.

The two-day stroke play championship has drawn golfers from all clubs and will start early today at Morogoro Gymkhana Club course.

After missing out action for several months due to Covid-19 scare, the lock horn for the top awards in the 36- hole event.

Among the notable figures engaged in the chase for the event’s top throne include the defending champion Angel Eaton from Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club of Dar s Salaam.

She will be playing against 60 golfers also enrolled for the title chase.

Eaton will renew rivalry with national team-mate and Lugalo Ladies Captain Hawa Wanyeche and Madina Iddi of Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC) and Neema Olomi, all top classed golfers.

But, as most golfers claimed, they didn’t have enough preparation for the event due to a short notice.

Global coronavirus pandemic has forced a cancellation of many local and international competitions; hence most of them were out of courses for several months.

The two-day competition has come to life this year, six years since it was last staged in 2014. Jointly organised by Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) and Morogoro club, the event will cover 36 holes.

Besides the ladies, there are men who have been invited to play in subsidiary category.

According to TLGU Vice-President Anita Siwale, preparation for the event has been finalised and they expect all golfers will enjoy playing on the brown course.

“We have over 60 golfers who have confirmed their participation, We didn’t expect that number because we are heading to the festival season,” she explained.

She added: “We are very grateful especially to men who have responded very well from a short notice. We understand that for a successful event we bet on them too”.

Siwale has thanked the main sponsor Vacuna Limited for bankrolling the event and Pepsi for co-sponsoring.

She said the only brown course in the country is in good condition and that she was optimistic every player will enjoy playing there.
