AfricaPress-Tanzania: THE country’s basketball bodies have sent their condolences, following the sudden demise of President John Magufuli and they have announced the immediate suspension of all scheduled basketball competitions and activities.
Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) who is responsible to oversee development and promoting the game in the country, said they have received with a great sadness the news of the death of the beloved President of Tanzania.
TBF President, Phares Magesa said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that his federation has received the news with great sadness.
“As Basketball family, we offer our condolences to all Tanzanians, members of his family and friends and we extend our heartfelt condolence.”
He stated that in accordance with the procedures and guidelines of the National Sports Council (NSC) in this regard all associations and clubs under TBF need to adhere to the laws and guidelines of the country.
Magesa insisted: “Federation has decided to suspend all basketball activities and competitions in all levels from March 18, 2021 so that we can join all Tanzanians at this difficult time in the nation.”
Rashid Hamza Khamis, the vice Chairman of Zanzibar Basketball Association (BAZA) also said they have sadly received the death of Tanzanian President Magufuli.
“The association extends its condolences to the family of President Magufuli, government officials and all of Tanzanians,” added Khamis.
He, however, said that in the wake of the tragedy, the association has announced the suspension of the ongoing Karume Cup.
He said that BAZA joins all Tanzanians in this difficult period of mourning and wishes the nation well.
“We ask God to rest the soul of President Magufuli in the right place.”
BAZA Competition and Technical Committee secretary Noel Mfangavo added that he has received with great sadness the death of the President.
Mfangavo said: “The Government has declared 14 days of mourning following this tragedy. We as BAZA we also decided to postpone Karume Cup until further notice and other activities too.
