AfricaPress-Tanzania: A SHORELINE of Mwanza city and its outskirts will be lit up mid next month when the traditional boat racing takes place in the Lake Victoria on 13th December this year.

Speaking about its preparations, the event’s organiser Herbert Rweikiza, who is the Manager of The Scope Solutions Limited, said 40 teams of fishermen including men and women from Ilemela, Nyamagana, Ukerewe, Buchosa and Sengerema districts have conformed to participate in the tournament.

Rweikiza commended the efforts shown by different stakeholders, namely The Association of Boat Riders in Mwanza and Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) through Balimi Extra Lager, who have bankrolled the event.

“The Boat Race will be held every year and next year it will involve Mara, Simiyu, Geita, Kagera and Kigoma regions in Lake Tanganyika and we expect to improve the competition by involving many different stakeholders,” Rweikiza said.

TBL lake Zonal Sales and Distribution Manager, Issa Makani said that they have been sponsoring boat races for over 10 years as they back again this year’s event.

Makani said that TBL values people in this area that is why for several years they have been sponsoring different games and sports activities to ensure people around this area manage to do exercise since it helps for physical fitness.

“We have selected Balimi Extra Larger because the name of the beer is common to all people in the Lake Zone and it represents farmers, animal keepers and fishermen,” he added.

He mentioned the prizes for winners whereby champions will scoop 1.5m/-, second placed will take home 1m/- and third winners 800,000/- while fourth winners will be awarded 600,000/- prizes.
