COASTAL UNION DOWNSIZE AZAM, KAGERA SUGAR HELD

AfricaPress-Tanzania: HAMAD Majimengi’s second half strike earned Coastal Union a 2-1 win over Azam FC in a closely contested Mainland Premier League match at the Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga on Thursday.

Host Coastal Union grabbed the lead after just nine minutes through Haji Uganda, who converted from a spot kick after Azam’s goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya committed a foul in the box.

Coming fresh from holding defending champions Simba to a 2-2 draw at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam last Sunday, Azam had to step up gear to match Coastal Union resilience.

George Lwandamina charges pulled level through Daniel Amoah,who deflected home a neat shot from Ayoub Lyanga in the 35th minute. It was a sweet revenge for Coastal Union, who lost 2-0 in the first round clash at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam.

The result saw Azam continue to settle in the third slot of the log on 33 points from 19 outings, six points behind second placed Simba with 39 points and 11 points behind leaders Young Africans on 44 points. meanwhile, Coastl Union climbed up to 9th slot from 14th after collecting 23 points from 19 outings.

On the other side, Visiting Gwambina FC held home side Kagera Sugar to a 1-1 draw in a closely contested Mainland Premier League match at the Kaitaba Stadium in Bukoba yesterday, reports MEDDY MULISA in Bukoba.. The game started at a cracking pace with both sides looking for an early goal.

It was Yusuf Mhilu who opened the score for Kagera Sugar scoring with a sizzling shot in the 6th minute. Gwambina settled with short passing game which saw left back Revocatus Richard sending a well calculated pass to Paul John in the 34th minute but the latter blasted the ball wide.

The second half saw both sides stepping up the tempo. Abdallah Seseme of Kagera Sugar received a nice pass from David Luhende only to see his kick punched to an abortive corner by custodian Mohamed Shaban of Gwambina.

With only four minutes left before full time Gwambina pulled level, when Meshack Abraham headed past helpless keeper Said Kipao off a long pass from Amos Charles.

Gwambina on 20 points from 18 matches remained 15 on the log, while Kagera Sugar remained eight on the log on 23 points from 19 matches.
