AfricaPress-Tanzania: A LOCAL beach volleyball player Davis Neeke has said that he is happy to join his Kenyan club after failing to do so last year because of Coronavirus global pandemic.

Ace, who is the national beach volleyball team ace, was last year recruited by Equity Bank Volleyball Club of Kenya, but could not manage to do so because of travel restrictions put globally to reduce transmission of Coronavirus pandemic.

Neeke told the ‘Daily News’ from Nairobi over the weekend, that he feels blessed to play in the Kenyan league that started late January this year.

“I’m very delighted to join Kenya’s Premier League outfit and expect to do well in my career,” he said. “The Kenyan league is tough but we expect to do well against our opponents,” he said.

Equity have accumulated 5 points so far from three played matches to settle at 7th out of 13th teams that are competing for national glory. They have won a game against Kenya Army 3-0, but lost to giants Kenya Prisons and GSU.

“We are fine, its tough start to feature for such strong teams, but to pick up points from our opponents gives us morale,” he said.

Neeke added that they work hard to get desired results. He said all is going well as measures to prevent against Covid-19 spread have been taken, among others, avoiding the shaking of hands.

Neeke said that he is very lucky to join a team like Equity which started featuring in the Kenyan top flight volleyball league three years ago.

Neeke joined Equity after his successful career at Mombasa Prisons.

“I am optimistic the team will qualify for the play off stage due to efforts put by the players in their quest for success. “Play-off stage is a very important step for the team and the individuals as it opens up a door to play in the African Club Championships and face continental top teams,” he said.

Neeke added that since his ambition is to play professional volleyball in Europe, the continental level events will be very important platform to showcase his skills and reach his desired goal.

“My desire remains the same, to play in Europe, I could do so some years ago had it not been my ankle injury that kept me out of the game in 2019. “ By the team I was at my best and several teams had shown interest to seek for my services, I’ am back now, I will work harder to get where I want to be,” said Neeke.

Unlike in Tanzania, volleyball is highly developed in Kenya with teams competing in the top international levels.
