PARALYMPICS UNVEILS THREE GAMES FOR TOKYO 2021

AfricaPress-Tanzania: TANZANIA Paralympic Committee (TPC) has picked three para sport events which will represent the country at the forthcoming 2021 Paralympic Games set to begin from August 24th to September 5th in Tokyo, Japan.

According to the press statement issued and signed by TPC General Secretary Ramadhan Namkoveka, the selected three sport disciplines are Para Athletic, Para Powerlifting and Para Swimming.

However, athletes in each of the mentioned categories will be required to compete at Paralympic World Qualification Tournament to get a ticket for the Paralympic Games.

“Para Athletic has got two athletes who are Sauda Njopeka and Ignas Mtweve. The latter has already competed in Dubai 2021 World Para Athletics Grand Prix-12th Fazza International Athletics which was staged in Dubai from February 6th to 14th,” reads part of the statement.

It further said Njopeka is progressing well with training sessions at JMK Youth Park in Dar es Salaam under the supervision of coach Bahati Mgunda and she is expected to compete at the Tunis 2021 World Para Athletics Grand Prix from March 14th to 21st in Tunisia.

“Before the competition, she is scheduled to undergo classification exercise to know her disability status so that she can be placed in the right category of the contest. “Efforts to get travelling documents for them are underway and all expenses for the two athletes to go in Dubai and Tunisia will be settled by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC),” the statement said.

About the Para Powerlifting, there are three athletes and one coach who will travel to Dubai to compete in the Dubai Fazza World Cup from June 16th to 21st this year and the competition will be used as a qualification platform for the Paralympic Games.

“Currently, we are searching for financial help to settle all their expenses like travelling documents, air tickets, accommodation, food, internal transport fares, Covid-19 tests and many more. “On the side of Para Swimming, three swimmers will take part in the disability classification exercise and qualify for one of the world swimming games to be held in Sheffield, USA from April 8th to 11th this year,” said the statement.
