Museveni Urges Greater Luweero to Embrace Govt Programs

Africa-Press – Uganda. President Museveni has called on residents of Greater Luweero to shift their focus from seeking government employment to creating jobs by fully embracing government initiatives, particularly the Parish Development Model (PDM).

The President made the remarks while addressing a large rally at Wabinyonyi Village grounds in Nakasongola Town Council, marking the climax of his zonal tour in the Greater Luweero region.

The President noted that Uganda’s population has exceeded 45 million people, yet the government can only employ about 480,000 individuals due to limited capacity as the country continues to develop.

He urged parents to prepare their children for careers in the private sector, highlighting the growing employment opportunities in factories, which now employ over 1.2 million Ugandans.

“Parents, prepare your children to work in commercial farms, hotels, factories, do commercial agriculture or become job creators in the commercial sector. The government cannot provide jobs for everyone,” Museveni said.

During his address, the President also responded to various concerns raised by leaders from the Greater Luweero region.

Among them was a request for a dedicated development program for the area.

While acknowledging the existing limited program for the Luweero Triangle, Museveni pledged that a more robust initiative would be considered after the 2026 elections.

“There’s a small program for Luweero Triangle but we shall expand it in future,” he assured.

On the issue of fisheries, Museveni reiterated the need for proper regulation to protect Uganda’s lakes, which he described as national resources.

He warned against the influx of unlicensed foreign fishermen from neighboring countries like Congo and Kenya, which has led to disorganization on the lakes.

“A lake is government property meant to benefit all Ugandans. Licensing ensures we know how many people can sustainably fish and helps prevent bad fishing practices,” Museveni said.

He promised to engage all stakeholders to resolve long-standing issues affecting the fishing communities once his PDM tours are concluded.

In response, Abdul Kadir Masaya, Chairperson of the Kyoga Boat Owners and Fish Mongers Association, appealed to the President to intervene and improve relations between the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and fishermen, noting frequent clashes.

“The situation between UPDF and fishermen is not good. We need to cooperate for better working relationships,” Masaya said.

President Museveni also addressed the persistent problem of livestock theft in Nakasongola, vowing to take strong measures against the perpetrators.

“Leaders have reported the theft of cows, pigs, coffee, goats, and other items by village thieves. I have already instructed security agencies on how to handle this, and I will personally follow up to ensure the issue is resolved,” the President assured the residents.

The rally marked the conclusion of President Museveni’s tour of the Greater Luweero region under the Parish Development Model program, which aims to uplift communities through sustainable economic empowerment and improved livelihoods.
