Africa-Press – Uganda. The Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, the Most Reverend Luigi Bianco, on Thursday paid a farewell courtesy call to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (International Affairs), Henry Oryem Okello, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Kampala as he concluded his diplomatic mission.
Archbishop Bianco expressed deep appreciation to President Museveni, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the people of Uganda for what he described as extraordinary support, hospitality, and kindness during his tenure.
He also thanked the government for the message of condolence following the passing of Pope Francis and for delegating Vice President Jesca Alupo to sign the condolence book at the Apostolic Nunciature.
“I have been deeply touched by the generosity, warmth, and faith of the Ugandan people,” the outgoing Nuncio said.
“This country has a special spirit — and I will truly miss Uganda.”
Archbishop Bianco is expected to depart Uganda by Sunday, ahead of his new diplomatic assignment in Lovania, where he is due to assume duty by June 20, 2025.
Hon. Oryem praised the Nuncio for his humility and openness, and for strengthening the spiritual and diplomatic bonds between Uganda and the Vatican.
He acknowledged the difficulty that often comes with saying goodbye to members of the diplomatic corps, remarking that lasting friendships are frequently forged through such service.
In a moment of levity, the minister jokingly promised to visit the Nuncio in Lovania with gifts from Uganda.
“I’ll bring Ugandan coffee, matooke, and all the tropical goodness we’re known for,” he said, drawing laughter from the room.
Archbishop Bianco also informed the minister that Rev Fr Georges Kwami Kouwonou will oversee the Apostolic Nunciature in Uganda in the interim, pending the appointment of a new Papal Nuncio.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended its gratitude to Archbishop Bianco for his devoted service and wished him blessings and success in his new posting.
“Uganda will always remain a second home to him,” read part of the ministry’s closing message.
