Africa-Press – Uganda. Duncan Abigaba took to running the poll. Micheal Mawanda sat back to run the numbers. In a rare political feat, an aspiring politician lost his own public opinion poll—and by a landslide.
On June 28, former Presidential Assistant Duncan Abigaba, who is vying for NRM National Vice Chairman for Western Uganda, posted a poll on his X (formerly Twitter) account, asking his 85,300 followers a straightforward question:
“Whom would you vote for as NRM National Vice Chairman for Western Region?”
The poll attracted over 14,300 votes—and the response was swift and brutal. Micheal Mawanda clinched a decisive 74%, leaving Abigaba trailing with 15%.
ICT State minister Chris Baryomunsi followed with 5%, while Mr Nzeire Kaguta, President Museveni’s younger brother, managed 6%.
Instead of rallying support, Abigaba’s poll lit up social media with endorsements for his opponent.
“As a delegate from Buganda, my choice is Hon. Micheal Mawanda,” commented Sarah Nansubuga.
“I have always stated that delegates from my region, including myself, are voting for Hon. Mawanda, the capable leader!” added another user, Cons. Aloyo.
While online polls aren’t part of the official NRM election process, this one has sparked fresh momentum for Mawanda’s candidacy—and some awkward moments for Abigaba’s team.
The final decision, however, lies with NRM delegates, who will cast their votes during the party’s national delegates conference scheduled for August 22, 2025, as per the official NRM elections roadmap.
But for now, one thing is clear: Twitter has spoken—and it wasn’t what the pollster expected.
