Isingiro District Chairman Backs Museveni for 2026

Africa-Press – Uganda. Isingiro District Chairman Alone Turahi has declared his full support for President Yoweri Museveni’s continued leadership, arguing that the 79-year-old leader remains capable of steering Uganda and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) for another 15 years.

“President Museveni is still very capable to lead this country for the next term of office—actually for the next 15 years,” Turahi said in an interview this week, ahead of the president’s official nomination on Saturday as NRM national chairman and party flagbearer for the 2026 general elections.

Turahi pointed to Uganda’s stability and development under Museveni, citing security, economic programs, and international recognition as evidence of successful leadership.

“When you look at Uganda in terms of security, economic development, and livelihood programs, you find that countries are now coming here to benchmark. That means we’re doing something right,” he said.

However, Turahi emphasized that to sustain this trajectory, Museveni will need to work more closely with younger leaders in the next term—especially those with strong grassroots and institutional influence.

He singled out Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among as a key figure in this vision.

“In the next term, the president needs young people to help him drive top programs on the agenda. People like the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, should be on the National Executive Committee (NEC),” Turahi said.

“That way, they can play an advisory role and ensure our manifesto is fully implemented.”

Turahi backed Among’s bid for the NRM’s 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female), a position within the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), describing her as a dynamic leader with the energy and commitment needed to support the president’s agenda.

A former member of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Turahi defected to the NRM five years ago and successfully contested for the Isingiro district chairmanship in the 2021 elections.

He has since been nominated unopposed to run for a second term in office.

His remarks come just days before President Museveni’s formal nomination to continue at the helm of the NRM and seek re-election in 2026—a move that cements his intention to extend a presidency that began in 1986.

As the party gears up for internal elections and national campaigns, Turahi’s message signals growing support within local government structures for not only Museveni’s re-election bid but also a more youth-inclusive NRM leadership.
