Africa-Press – Uganda. Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has been formally nominated by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission to contest for the influential position of Second National Vice Chairperson (Female), setting up a potential showdown with incumbent Rebecca Kadaga.
Among arrived at the NRM Electoral Commission offices in Kampala on Friday morning under a steady downpour, accompanied by cheering supporters, Members of Parliament, and top party officials including Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua and State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang.
The nomination ceremony, overseen by NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Tanga Odoi, drew scores of supporters who danced and chanted slogans in support of Among’s bid, turning the rain-soaked morning into a festive political rally.
Dr. Odoi confirmed that Among’s team had communicated in advance and that all necessary documentation had been verified prior to her official nomination.
Although she did not speak to journalists after the event, Among was quickly escorted to Hotel Africana, where she held a closed-door meeting with NRM delegates.
Speaking shortly afterward, Minister Peter Ogwang said Among’s nomination represented a generational shift within the NRM.
“We need young energy to drive the party forward. Anita Among has already delivered several opposition members into the party. Her mobilization skills are unmatched,” Ogwang said.
He added that Among symbolizes a dynamic new leadership style that is essential to maintaining and expanding the NRM’s support at the grassroots.
“We want people who can mobilize and rally support. As a party, we want to grow — and only Among can do this,” he said.
Ogwang went further to urge Kadaga to step aside, arguing that most party delegates have already thrown their weight behind Among.
Among’s nomination comes amid broader internal realignments in the NRM, with other high-profile nominations held the same day.
Former Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa was present, while Mike Mukula and Hamson Obua were nominated for the NRM National Vice Chairperson slots for Eastern and Northern regions, respectively.
If successful, Among’s election would see her take on a powerful role within the NRM’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), deepening her influence within both the legislature and the ruling party’s highest decision-making organ.
