Africa-Press – Uganda. Buganda Kingdom contributed 40 percent of Uganda’s Shillings 10.04 trillion in national coffee revenue for 2024, according to Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, who has urged Ugandans to continue growing the crop despite falling global prices.

Speaking at Bulange Mengo on Thursday during a strategic meeting with Masaza Chiefs, Mayiga attributed Buganda’s dominant role in the sector to the success of Mmwanyi Terimba—a kingdom-backed coffee initiative that has revived coffee farming across the region since its launch.

“Even though the price for coffee has gone down, Buganda must continue leading by example. The wealth is in the land. Coffee is not just a crop—but a catalyst for economic independence,” Mayiga said.

Originally coined as a slogan meaning “coffee does not lie,” Mmwanyi Terimba has evolved into a registered coffee buying and marketing company, Mmwanyi Terimba Limited, operational since 2021.

The Katikkiro praised farmers in the region for embracing the program and urged more households to join, stressing that agriculture remains central to Uganda’s economy and the Kingdom’s vision of self-reliance.

“Our people are starting to see the value of agriculture again — especially coffee,” he said.

“Through the Mmwanyi Terimba project, we have empowered households to plant coffee, improve their livelihoods, and strengthen the Kingdom’s economic foundation.”

He also challenged Masaza Chiefs and local leaders to intensify farmer sensitisation, especially among the youth, encouraging them to view agriculture not as a fallback, but as a viable and profitable career path.

With global demand for Ugandan coffee increasing, Mayiga expressed optimism that Buganda’s leadership in the coffee sector will only strengthen further, reinforcing its role in the country’s broader agricultural transformation.
